Does mankind enjoy a special relationship with God which is not shared with other earthly (or otherworldly) creatures? Is this relationship a bonus or burden? Take the case of vegetarianism, for example: some would say that we humans should be evolved enough that we should no longer eat meat. This is not a choice for many of our fellow creatures in the animal kingdom; many are hard-wired in such a way that they must eat meat in order to survive. Altruism is another example: although some biologists claim to have observed altruistic behavior in so called "lower" animals, it remains for humans as a kind of peak target and measure of evolution. Paradoxically, the survival-of-the-fittest drive which presumably brought mankind to the top of the food chain must now be bypassed to complete the final stage of ascension into the heavenly realms...
Renunciation the Pathway to Heavenward Ascension?
|
A central recurring theme of many spiritual paths is the notion that mankind evolves through renouncing the "lower passions". Abstinence, whether it be in the form of fasting, refraining from sex, renunciation of worldly possessions or any kind of denial of "animal" desires seems to be a common thread through all world religions. Can we really take these injunctions to exit the realm of passions and animal comforts at face value? Or are there darker forces at play? Nietszche suggested that the church fashions a weak and servile populace through instructing it's followers to be humble, meek and self-effacing. There are enough well-known examples of authority figures within religious organizations who don't appear to think the rules of abstinence apply to them. Gurus, ministers and priests have all been caught with their hands in the cookie jar, indulging in passions which were apparently off-limits to their followers. Is their a state of being beyond the blind obedience to spiritual doctrine which can take us forward in our spiritual evolution towards the realization of our ultimate human potential?
